Comfort while pumping is essential for maintaining milk supply without pain or plugs

Flange vs. Collection Cup: What’s the difference (and does it matter)?

Some folks can pump with either a traditional flange or a collection cup, but they are not the same—and some boobs will absolutely notice the difference.

Here’s the scoop:

✨ Traditional flange:
•Sits outside the breast with a clear funnel shape
•The nipple extends into a tunnel that mimics a baby’s latch, with visible motion
•Generally offers stronger, more direct suction
•Easier to troubleshoot fit, suction, and milk flow (because you can see what’s happening)

✨ Collection cups (like a wearable pump, Cara cups, Legendairy milk makes some, Freemie, etc):
•Sit inside the bra, fully enclosing the breast
•Milk collects in a chamber rather than a bottle hanging off the flange
•Suction may feel gentler or less direct, and may pull more on areolar tissue from the angle of the tunnel
•In most it’s very hard to see the nipple, or you don’t see your nipple at all, so it’s harder to monitor alignment or troubleshoot pain

🤷‍♀️ Can you use both? Maybe. But not always.
Some bodies love the freedom of collection cups. Others say their output tanks or their nipples hate it.
Why? Because the way suction is delivered is different.

⚠️ Key things to know:
•A collection cup often reduces effective suction if it’s not from the same brand as the pump. If you’re already on the edge with output, this might not be your best bet.
•Nipple trauma can sneak up on you in a cup—because you can’t always see what’s happening.
•You may need a different flange size in a collection cup than in a traditional flange. Yes, really.
•Cups can shift in the bra, losing suction and pumping output

🛠️ What works best? The one that helps you feel comfortable, supported, and gets you the milk your baby needs.
Some people start with a standard flange and switch to cups for work. Others use flanges at home and save the cups for errands or short pumps. There’s no one right answer—but if you’re struggling with output, pain, or fit, switching styles (or getting help) can make a huge difference.

💬 Have you tried both? What worked for you? Let’s compare notes.
